The "Gift from the Heart" project is all about changing the lives and health of those in our communities all across Canada. Student volunteering provides a pathway for building skills (or even future employment) while benefiting local citizens.
Amy Au's decorated vitae of accomplishments along with her impressive volunteer work in the field of dental hygiene has earned her the prestigious distinction as GFTH volunteer of the year in 2018. The award encourages and rewards dental hygiene social responsibility volunteer service, while also applauding and supporting academic excellence. Amy has indeed surpassed these expectations and more as you will see in this article, and we excited to shared her success with you as a model you can follow.
While completing a rigorous full-time study of dental hygiene at Oxford College in Toronto, Amy Au is excelling in both academics and in social responsibility. Amy is currently the senior student representative with the Canadian Dental Hygienists’ Association, CDHA leadership program where she presides as a liaison between Oxford College faculty, students, and the CDHA. Amazingly, Amy maintains a position as class representative of her November 2018 graduating class where she advocates for students to ensure an enhanced student experience. Yet, Amy still contributes her time and resources, and gave a "Gift From The Heart" this past April 7, 2018. When ask how does she find time to achieve such accomplishments, Amy responds; “I turn my dreams into goals by sticking close to my daily planner and rewarding myself for each small step that is taken towards achieving said objectives”.
Amy discovered her passion for dentistry while she worked as a dental receptionist and later as a dental assistant. Amy epitomizes an international dental health professional whose volunteer experiences with CN Tower, Uni-vision, RBC, and Unicef has helped to not only to promote oral health but to uplift communities alike, one person at a time.
Amy has accepted the as Student Liaison with the GFTH project where she engages students and registered dental hygienists in promoting no cost dental care for those who may not have access to such care. “I sought out advice from my mentor and the former student liaison at the "Gift From The Heart" project, Tristan Howell about volunteer opportunities such as the GFTH, I was advised that the project has a direct high-quality impact on people's lives and it was very reassuring to know that my commitment to social responsibility could be rewarded in the first if it's kinds Volunteer of the Year Award. I followed Tristan's guidance and when I was announced as the winner, I was overwhelmed with so much joy that I became speechless. It is impressive not only to receive such wonderful gifts but moverso to be valued by such a wonderful organization” said Amy after she accepted the 2018 volunteer of the year award from GFTH project.
Amy is dedicated to creating an indelible mark the dental hygiene community by increasing student participation volunteer opportunities such as the GFTH project well after she graduates. Amy is also equally committed to helping like-minded mentee in dental hygiene programs to gain work experience through volunteering.
