WHY DO DENTAL HYGIENISTS TAKE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE BEFORE PROVIDING TREATMENT? As registered health-care professionals, it is the standard of care for dental hygienists to assess and record blood pressure on all of their patients. The reading must then be discussed with the patient as a means of helping them take charge of their overall health. By and large, dental patients who are not being treated by their primary care physician for a systemic disease will typically view themselves as being "healthy." These same patients typically see their dental hygienist two to four times per year for routine preventive care yet may only visit their physician every few years. Dental hygienists are in a unique position to assess blood pressure and increase our patients' awareness about the risks associated with untreated hypertension due to the sheer number of times we see an individual patient on an annual basis. When we inform an unknowing patient that he or she has undetected, uncontrolled hypertension, the dental visit then serves as an entry point for the person to take charge of their overall health.

We are thrilled to welcome Shawn Lauzer to our Board of Directors. Shawn has been the Operations Manager for Trinity Fire and Security since 2015, when he first moved to Quinte West. A graduate from the University of Ottawa in Anthropology, Shawn’s passion has always been towards Culture and Community Development. Driven to make a better community for his young family, Shawn is excited to join the Gift from the Heart Team and their community initiative. Recently completing three terms on the Board of Directors for the Quinte West Chamber of Commerce, Shawn brings a wide range of experiences and skills to GFTH; having worked with the local business community and on various committees like the Young Professionals and Government Affairs. He works happily with small business owners in the community to help grow their operations.
